Connecting Brother Printer to Wifi

The recommended approach for connecting to your Brother printer is having both your phone and printer on the same WiFi network. The below will demonstrate downloading the Brother iPrint&Scan app, and adding the printer to your WiFi network. The iPrint&Scan app is required on Android, as it includes drivers that Android needs in order to talk to the printer. For iPhone users, AirPrint does not require such drivers, and will automatically identify any printer on the same WiFi network that's compatible with AirPrint.

First Print Alignment

The first time you print with Spark, the app needs to have its alignment configured. If you haven't already, determine if the site is an SRP or Non-SRP site, and then add about 40 items worth of tags to the list. You may print the same tag multiple times, but a good variety of items is preferred.

The print alignment settings are on the same screen you select the Printer type (which should be MRW - AirPrint), and is the final screen before the print preview.

On this screen you will see the following fine position adjustments:
  • Horizontal Offset
  • Vertical Offset
  • Horizontal Spacing
  • Vertical Spacing
These settings calibrate the device for the printer. Start with the same values as shown above and then continue to the print screen.

You should see a preview similar to the above. At the top of the screen the app will name what device these tags are printing to. If it says PDF or anything but the expected printer, select the down arrow to the right of the device listed. This will reveal a list of options. Is your printer there? If yes, select it. If no, refer to the above "Enable Printer Plugin" section.

If the print preview screen lists your Brother printer and a print icon, tap the print icon to initiate the first print.

First print results may be a mess. This is because the printer is attempting to print off the tags and the toner can't properly adhere to that surface, which results in print artifacts appearing randomly across the page. Here are a few scenarios and how to resolve them:
Picture
The first label looks fine, but as we get further down the page, the print begins before or after the label. Increase your V spacing value to move the print down, or decrease your V spacing to move the print up. In this case we need to move the print down, so we would increase the V spacing. Increase the current value by 1.
Picture
The print runs off the page. Try first decreasing your H spacing value by 1. Your H offset value may also be 1 value too high. First start with H spacing if the left-most tags look good.
Picture
Here the print is too far left as we move across the page. First try decreasing you H spacing. Your H offset may also be 1 value too low. First start by increasing H spacing if the left-most tags look good.
After printing, the app will ask if the tags printed successful, when you say "yes", the app will remember the H Offset and V Offset values for future printing. You may record these values somewhere, just in case they are cleared from the app by accident.
